My wife and I, before the kids came along, used to go to a Thai place in Hoboken. We were convinced the level of heat in the dishes depended on the chef’s mood each night. Sometimes the beef with basil was moderately spicy, other nights I couldn’t chug the ice water fast enough.

We love  Thai flavors – fresh basil, lime juice, chillies. My favorite dishes are usually the the spicy ones, like stir fried rice noodles with beef, garlic, basil and chillies (Pad Kee Mou). My son orders spring rolls with sweet and sour sauce. My wife and oldest daughter go for the coconut milk-based curries.

   Check out Bancock Kitchen on Caldwell on Bloomfield Ave. Get the shrimp and scallops KeWan…..off the chain GOOD!

   Thai Kitchen in Warren! They have some off menu items that they prepare on different days of the week. Try the “puffs” appetizer!

   Thanks, Christine. Thai Kitchen (Warren) is now on the map. Seems to be a different owner than the Thai Kitchens in Bridgewater, Hillsborough and Chester.

   Pat Thai in Lake Hiawatha may well be the best and most authentic Thai food that I’ve had outside of San Francisco.

   What’s my qualification for such a broad reaching statement? I’m a food writer for NJ Monthly, Edible Jersey, Saveur, NJ Life Health and Beauty and many others.

   Heat scale is 1-10 here. But please understand, it’s not about the heat, it’s about the flavor. Sure you can get it pretty darned hot… In fact more heat than your stomach can handle (unless you’re accustomed to a 10, don’t go past 5)… Friendly staff cannot do enough for you. Yes, it’s BYOB. Just go. Cheers. wb

   I really like Bamboo leaf in Bradley Beach. The food is very reasonable and the Pho is some of the best I have ever had. It is very reasonable and you get big portions. FYI,there is also a Bamboo Leaf in Howell, but the Bradley Beach location is better.

   Siam Spice on Fischer Blvd. in Toms River is very good. I had the red curry with chicken and fish cakes. The fish cakes were $5 & the curry dish was around $12. Very reasonable. I prefer it to Bamboo Leaf in Bradley Beach because the food tasted fresher and was cheaper. Their white tea is addictive. If you plan to go, the parking lot can be packed on certain nights as their is a karate class next door. This is my favorite new restaurant.

    Thai House Rock is small husband and wife restaurant with 5 tables in it, so I always call to make sure “Eggie” has a table open. Service on a busy Friday night can be slow, but worth the wait.

    Most of his customers are takeout, but a few of us locals like to keep it a secret, so we can always get a table. The food is always freshly prepared and not typical of a Thai restaurant. My fav is the crispy chicken with ginger of basil sauce. Thai iced tea from the menu or my own Indian or Thai beer goes well in this BYO place.

    The owner used to play in a rockband in Thailand, hence the theme of the place. 78 album covers decorate the place.
