Yum Nur
Almost hidden in a parking lot off to the side of a Foodtown, Parsippany’s Pat Thai, like Chengdu 1 in Cedar Grove and Saigon in South Plainfield, proves that some of the Garden State’s best ethnic food is found in Jersey’s ubiquitous suburban strip malls.
Pat Thai’s menu has plenty of choices, including the traditional stir fired rice noodle dish, Pad Thai. Try the Steamed Dumplings with Sweet Plum Sauce, Spring Rolls or Yum Nur (Grilled Sliced Beef with Shallots, Roasted Rice Powder, Cilantro, Lemongrass, Kaffir Lime Leaves Tossed in Lime & Chili Dressing) as a tasty appetizer. Baked Jumbo Shrimp, Glass Noodles & Veggies Cooked in Garlic & Black Pepper Sauce Served in a Hot Pot (Goong Obe Woonsen) is delicious. The Yellow Curry with chicken and coconut milk my wife ordered, at spice level 3 (see below), is flavorful and very spicy. We were too full for dessert, but next time I’ll definitely try the Black Sticky Rice with Mango.

Pat Sanshompoo, the owner and chef, doesn’t baby her customers when it comes to spiciness. There are eight spice levels to choose from when you order, on a scale of 1 to 20. I was tempted to try “Hot (5),” described as “ideal for seasoned spice connoisseurs, or those of Indian, Pakistani, or Caribbean origin.” I love spicy food, but there’s a point where it gives me the hiccups, even though I want to keep eating. Not being from a tropical or spicy country, I chickened out and ordered “4.5.” Ironically, my wife, who is from a Caribbean country, but not a particalarly spicy one, ordered “American Hot,” spice level 3. Our dishes were true to the descriptions. If you like it hot, you can get it here.
Pat Thai moved to Parsippany in 2007 from its original location in Bloomfield. The exuberantly decorated restaurant has about a dozen tables in a dining room that used to be a pizza parlor. Our waiter was more than happy to answer questions about gluten-free ingredients for one of our group, and even came back with more information about sauces from the chef. For fresh and spicy Thai food with great service, you can’t do much better in New Jersey.
